Default CPT 5.01 Installation Troubles (WinXP SP2, Office 2003) - 09-22-2006, 10:20 AM

CPT 5.01 (DE)
Win XP SP2 (Office 2003 installed)
U.S.R. 56k Message Modem

Hi everybody!

I am having a problem (re-)installing CPT. Since I installed Office 2003 two days ago, my CPT did not start up any longer. Since I had strange problems with CPT before, I simply uninstalled it and tried to reinstall. Unfortunately this does not work, the installation process does not finish but asks me to insert WinXP-CD when reaching 97% progress (the install windows says something like "Installing Fax Print Driver"). However, when I insert the CD nothing happens. The install software does not seem to get the required drivers. I only find a tiny window opened in background saying "Scanning File ....\sp2.cab". If I choose cancel in the "Insert CD"-window, I receive an error notice "ERROR: Error Number 0x0040707; Dll function crashed: PbkInstall._GetBookNames "

As far as I know, this is an issue regarding Outlook 2003, is that correct and could this explain my problem? (I do not operate a Dell PC). Since I had to buy CPT 5 because my older CPT version was not compatible to WinXP, I was really pissed, if version 5 was not working as long as office 2003 is installed. I hope you understand...

I really need this software get back to work! Can somebody help?

Thanks for your support,
regards
Christoph

That error is caused by Outlook 2003. To install and use that version you will need to uninstall the Outlook 2003 out of Office 2003, Once Outlook has been removed you can install classic phone tools than reinstall Outlook if you would like.

Hi again!

Thanks so far, this really helped. But now I have a new issue regarding the installation of my modem. As abovementioned I have an U.S.R. 56K Message Modem which supports independent mode. The driver is properly installed and CPT seems to work after reinstalling (I called my modem for testing and everything worked). The only thing missing is the "configure independent modus" and "control independent modus" options as part of the setup menu (it worked absolutely properly before).

I had this isse long time ago and cannot remember how I solved it. So far, I tried all drivers available and there is no problem installing these but nothing changes regarding the independent modus options.

The indipendent modus is all I am operating the modem and CPT for, so I still need your help to make the second step getting back to work...

With in Classic phone tools,
Under the configure> General setup/General configuration With in the Tabs along the top, there should be a tab listed as independent mode..

With in this tab you will be able to set up the software to recive ther faxes that are stored in the modem while the software is closed.

If you dont find this independent modem tab, you can try to reinstall the modem drivers with in the classic phone tools.

1. Open phone tools and go to Configure, General Configuration and the
communication tab
2. Click on Change Modem
3. It should come up with a wizard and click the Next button
4. Select your modem on the list by clicking on it and then click Next
5. Put a check in the box in the left corner.and click on Next
6.highlight your modem manufacture on the left, and on the right the modem model.
7.click on next
8. Then click Finish
9.put a check mark in the exclusive use. and say yes to the warning.

Hi!

You really pointed out my problem: There ist no "independent modem" choice and this is, what really (!) drives me mad. Even after working step by step along your list... After finishing, the modem is Displayed as Texas Instrument Speaker Phone (?!) at TAPI Modem Port (instead of COM 2m which is the coorect port and also shown in window's hardware manager...).

On 3com website I found an older version of Phone Tools (4.21), which operates the modem trouble free (with correct hardware and port information). Since version 5 is more comfortable (and also I paid, i think, a lot of money for it) and already worked in connection with my USR, I am still hoping to run it one day in the near future... Is there maybe a chance to use some of the previous version's files to operate my USR?

Thanks one more time, guys...

Christoph

It is possible to use 5.01 with files from 4.21 (although version 6 uses a different format/setup which doesn't allow this). Here's how I got 4.21 to work with files from my old version 2 PhoneTools installation floppy disks (note that this works with English versions of the programs but I dont know about the German version):
  • Make backups of the newer version (in your case 5.01) installation folder files if you dont already have a CDROM/archive with the unmodified version.

Copy the files modems.pac and wmodems.dat from the old version 4.21 installations files folder (the version which worked properly with your modem) into the new installation files folder for CPT 5.01 overwriting the native files in the process.

Install 5.01 ensuring the correct modem is internally configured.
I have tried this with 5.01 and prefer 4.21 as 5.01 has that pointless email feature (pointless because there are far better free email programs even including Outlook Express) also there is alot more "clutter" with no advantage as far as I can see. I did find 5.01 hung during the installation routine at the modem detection point but a reboot and manual modem reselection within CPT after this fixed things.

If your modem is not correctly identified in Windows device manager, this indicates its not installed using the correct inf - try reinstalling the modem using the update driver function and ensuring the correct file is used from USRs website here: http://www.usr-emea.com/support/s-pr...nkg&prod=5668d (assuming that's your model of Message Modem - there are different types).

I realise you mentioned you paid for 5.01 but I'm curious why you prefer it over 4.21. I paid for version 6 (as the original OEM supplied version 2 wouldn't work properly under Windows XP) but after finding neither Ver 6 nor 5.01 worked fully with my Pace 56 Solo independent mode modem, I've reverted to a modified version of 4.21 as described above.
