View Full Version : Buidling multiple doc website

I'm using v6. I've created a primary page document which contains the links to the other 8 documents that will comprise my website - but how do I actually build a package that contains all the docs? I've searched the old threads, but maybe I've not entered the right search criteria - sorry if that's the case. I tried by opening my primary page doc, and I thought that it would automatically build-in the linked docs, but it didn't...
Also, my webhosting provider informs me that I have to make sure that my primary page is loaded into the root of the right directory - will the Publish Asst. automatically do this, as long as I specify the right directory?

It may be easier to manage a "multiple document" site if you use a third party FTP program as opposed to the built in publishing assistant. You have much more control over things using a ftp program.
You can download WS_FTPLE (the program I use) from my website here...

When making a multiple doc site, each document will need to be treated as its own individual site, you will need to manually make all the crosslinks using full internet addresses for the links. The program will not be able to cross link your documents.

Thank you for your reply David. But I'm baffled as to why Webeasy has the option of inserting links to other docs!!! The reason why I had to create multiple docs was because I needed variable page lengths (my site contains a lot of text under different headings - a bit like a magazine) - I didn't realise that home-user website s/w doesn't really cater for this kind of site. I'm not looking forward to trying to build the website manually.

Another thought.... if I have to build and link several websites, when I only really want one, won't each site be regarded as 'separate' by Google, and thus affect my chances of being included in search results?
I have found a ticket on ihostticket.com re linking multiple docs, which indicated that it's possible to open a doc, build, close that doc, and open and build another in the same package, but Webeasy wouldn't add to the existing package, only the option of overwriting the first one, so it didn't work for me.

I think that's kinda left over from WE5 - I used many years and linked documents together very easily. When I upgraded to WE7 - I could see the option there but would not work - I first thought it was a bug but I think they just did not develop that aspect. So, I just link them together by URLS.

You are over thinking this and also asking for the impossible I think.
Each document/web site you create is going to be tied to your home page.
IE: Barbzsite.com/contact us.htm Contact us would be another document /website under your domain. Google has no problem with it.
Once you get going on this you will appreciate the separate page deal. Makes it easy and fast to update just one page. As someone said a independent ftp program makes this a lot easier..and faster. I use 3dftp and there will be recommendations of other good programs, some even free.
Hang in there. It doesn't happen overnite but does get easier over time, just like anything else.

Thanks for the further replies. Hmmm, Dave is actually right about "overthinking" ! I can tackle complex, abstract problems without getting stressed, but creating separate websites in the same domain space? er... I think I need an assistant! or else purchase alternative software - I've come across one which might suit me better.

Let us know what program you settle on AFTER you work with it at least 2 months.

Dave, I think that linking docs in one package was a reasonable expectation of the s/w, and indeed it did provide half the functionality. As Avanquest put the full functionality into v5, they obviously thought that at least some users would expect it. If the full linking functionality hadn't, for some strange reason, disappeared, then my website would be up and running now, and I would be happy. I'm going to acquire a v5 to see if that works as a quick-fix, to avoid using a 3rd party FTP, as I think that I'm likely to make mistakes if I do that. According to Amazon UK, people are still buying v5... I also want to avoid having to spend time starting from scratch with new s/w, but eventually I'll spend some time checking-out what's best for me. I'm grateful for everybody's replies, as it would have taken a lot longer to find out what I needed to know if I'd waited for replies to tickets from Avanquest support.
