Hi-
I just installed WE7Professional from CD on an XP-based Toshiba Tablet PC (which is in great working order). After the install, I double-click on the icon to start up WE and just get the old waiting/hourglass thing happening. Tried rebooting several times, but I can't even get into the program. Any thoughts about why this is happening / any suggestions? The Toshiba itself is very updated with latest patches, etc. I also tried with firewall, A/V temporarily disabled but this didn't help. Thanks.

See if you can find anything in the Event Viewer.
Also, did you try to uninstall and reinstall? If so, did you uninstall, then reboot, then reinstall?
And finally, was your firewall off during the install process? If not, try that.

Thanks.

I tried all of the above except looking at Event Viewer (where is that, what would it show?). I even tried reinstalling using the Downloaded version instead of from CD, but that didn't help either. Didn't receive any error messages on either install. When installing, firewall was off, rebooted after install, uninstall etc.

Other suggestions?

Thanks, tried with different Windows compatibilities (icon's properties --> compatibility option). No luck.

Every other program runs fine on this computer; no other issues with it.

This is a real puzzler. I tried to get through to Avanquest tech support yesterday, but gave up after 30 mins on hold/wait queue.

Anyone else run into this problem?

I've seen elsewhere on this board mention of ver 7.1 of WE. I was wondering if that might help. As best as I can tell, from the Avanquest download a trial site and on the CD, it seems to be 7.0, but I can't verify. Anyone know what version one gets when downloading the trial? Is there an easy way to get 7.1?

The download is or was 7.0 3 weeks ago. Probably still is. Your problem is weird. I have it on both xp and vista machines. You don't by chance have some other software from them do you? I found that will mess things up big time.

Yes, I do have other software from Avanquest (NitroPDF Professional). But I think that was developed by another firm, and is just resold by Avanquest.

Yes, I agree, the problem is weird. If I have Windows Task Manager open, it shows WE for about 3 seconds as "running" then becomes "not responding." I don't have other applications running at same time.

Is there a version 7.1 in reality?

Mine did the same thing. Right click the icon and 'Open as Administrator'

When Right-clicking icon: No option labeld "Open as Administrator" so...
I tried ("Run As: Administrator") but it didn't work..
Got an error message to the effect of "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"

I also tried to reach Avanquest Tech Support again today. Gave up after being on hold nearly an hour.

In XP, go to Start, then Administrative tools. I don't have XP, never will either, but you can probably find it in the Control Panel.

The Application tab will show you Applications that don't start and why.
The System Tab is also very usefull.

Thanks. Found Event Viewer. Took a look. Unfortunately... Nothing to show that's related to the problem at hand. What was there mostly had to do with my webcam not being plugged in or iPod. Nothing about Web Easy.

I spoke with Customer Service today, and was told that there wasn't much they could do to get me in touch with tech support. Basically, they're apparently very understaffed. It's not good when a company cannot take care of their customers. It can cause serious branding problemsn that are hard to undo. I'm sure they have their reasons (merging US and French operations, and etc etc.). Still, I'm now less likely to buy or recommend more of Avanquest products because they're not there when needed.

Anyone from Avanquest TS read this board? If so, please jump in...

Sorry to hear that. You should have see at least one red error where a process failed to start.

Is your laptop plugged into the internet when you try to run WE7? If not, plug it in and try it. Yeah, a real longshot:)

What version of Microsoft NetFramework do you have installed? I have 1.1 and 2.0. There are later versions but you probably don't need them.

As a test, right click the WE7 icon and select properties. Click on the tab that says Compatability. Try selecting a version down, ie W2000 and see if that works. Don't forget to set it back if it doesn't.

Good luck,
Zeek

Thanks Zeek. Laptop was connected to Internet, current version of NetFramework installed (from Microsoft Update, is prob. v3), have tried the various Windows version compatibilities (to no avail). This is a real puzzler!

Is there maybe some *.ini file or some other start up configuration file that could be at issue?

Just for giggles.
1: Would you want to try uninstalling that other program, rebooting and see what happens?
2: Would you want to try WE on another 'puter?

The only other thing I can think of is trying your favorite registry cleaner looking for conflicts or old junk.

Nothing to lose by trying at this point.

The reason I asked about NetFramework is because I had a password management application I was using. After updating from NetFrame 1 to Netframe 2, it no longer worked. It would hang and never come up.

Since there isn't any Technical Support available for WE, and I can't find anything about the software requirements, I don't know if NetFrame is even an issue. But, then again, I can't say for sure that it isn't:D

I'm running on XP and have 2 versions of NetFrame so I imagine you can too if you want to give it a shot.

As far as the .ini or config file, you bet. That is why I mentioned the Event Viewer. The only reason I can think of why an event is not appearing in the Event Log is because it is full and not set to automatically overwrite. Without an error of some sort any type of debugging is a shot in the dark.:D

Good luck,
Zeek

I finally was able to get through to telephone support... which (credit where credit's due) turned out to be helpful. I mentioned I was using this on a Tablet PC... the problem was tracked to a software conflict with "tabtips.exe" which needs to be deactivated prior to launching Web Easy. Who knew?!! fyi - Web Easy is the only program on this Tablet PC (and it has a lot of software loaded) that has a conflict like this. All my other sofware runs fine.

The info subsequently sent to me by tech support is below:

<<#1 When I attempt to start WebEasy the initial splash screen opens then the application closes. What can I do to run this software on my Tablet PC?

To correct this problem, please open the Task Manager and end the "tabtip.exe" process before launching WebEasy.

This is the handwriting recognition software included with Tablet PC edition of Windows. The process does not need to be running unless the user wants to input information by handwriting. If it is stopped with the task manager it has no effect on any function other than handwriting input. It will also start automatically if a user wants to input handwriting.

#2 When I attempt to start WebEasy the initial splash screen opens then the application closes. What can I do to run this software on my Tablet PC?

Please open the task manager and end the tabtip.exe process before launching Webeasy. This process will start again automatically if it is needed. This is the handwriting recognition software included with Tablet PC edition of Windows. The process does not need to be running unless the user wants to input information by handwriting and if it is stopped with the task manager it has no effect on any function other than handwriting input. It will also start automatically if a user wants to input handwriting. >>
