I have been putting my email address on web site in the form of text. I have heard that it can copied by bots and sends out spam ? - a lot of it. Anyone know how true this is ?
I just found out if you select the shadow box for text - there is an option to make text an image - is this a good way to prevent that or would you just have a clickable link that opens an e-mail address without putting it on the actual page ? Thanks for any info - I have learned a lot since i found this forum - you guys rock

Yes, your premise is true to some extent. There are a few websites I visit on a daily basis, they made thier email addy as a Gif with the email addy on it, you couldn't click on it as a link, they did this because they were getting some much spam. The one guy that participates here, David Russo, he had his email addy 'Joe-Jobbed', hijacked so to speak, spammers forged his email addy and used it to send garbage all over the net as if it was sent from him. Lastly, some big shot programmer told me I should get my email 'encrypted', I haven't done that, too lazy, too much other stuff to do. I would say this is entirely up to u what u decide.

WebMonkey08, Have you tried the convert text to image box in the shadow box ? Works easy and when you upload to web - you cannot drag and copy like the other text - just wondering if this works against bots ? Anyone know ?

There's many ways to do what you want to do, just don't link to it. Put you email addy on a button, something, just don't link..

I think your Web Host has something to do with this also, in regards to security...(I think...)
It is very true.
And cause frustrating to many web owners.
don't put your email in any way that will be exposed to bots.
and by that I mean don't put it no where in your coding either as bots read the code itself.
there are some techniques to hide your mail address to some point .
putting a picture instead can help but can cause trouble for users trying to mail you, and in fact to users with limitations.
I can say that I made a picture like mail address from flash but it can also be pressed on to open the outlook or others.
and my form uses a Captcha just for that reason.
I haven't got 1 spam till now, and I'm serious...
I even talked to my provider to check if something is wrong with my mail that I don't get spam... but found it to be true.

I assume you are talking about the spam warning I have on my davidrosso.com site, yeah spammers had (and still do) a field day with my domain name. It really had nothing to do with the address being available on my website, its meerely the fact that my address was widely in use on lists and stuff around the net. The hijacking of the domain can happen to ANYBODY that has their own domain name, its really quite simple, you just forge the email headers and put any address you want in the FROM spot and the domain name holder gets blamed for the spam if people complain.
I have a nifty tool that encrypts the html code so it can't be read, it can be used to protect the code of any html page, it works like a champ, I don't have it in use on any of my pages at the moment but can put up a sample of it if anyones interested. It prevents right-clicks and viewing of the source. The program is called "HTML Guard".

Okay, so I went ahead and encypted my contact page so you guys can see how the "HTML Guard" program works, plus I've gotten a few spams lately to the address that was listed on that page and vulernable to bot collection.
So go to my site, visit the CONTACT page, notice that RICHT CLICK doesnt work and then also notice that if you go to VIEW - SOURCE you can't read it, no email address anywhere for the bots to collect!
If anyone likes the way the program works, I try and get it posted up on the software section of my other site so you can download it and try it for yourself.

Thanks davidrosso, I used the option to turn my text into image and while I cannot copy and paste on it - I did not think about the source ! I checked and it still does show up in source even thought it is now an image. I would like that encryption program. Thanks again.

Okay, I updated my page and uploaded the HTML Guard program, it can now be downloaded from my personal page http://www.davidrosso.com
Go to that page, then select SOFTWARE, SOUNDS & MISC DRIVERS from the navigation menu on the left. Its the first program on that page.
The program is shareware and will place a watermark at the bottom of your encrypted page until you purchase it, however, I may have heard something about a hack for the program (wink wink) but thats just heresay (contact me).
