Can anyone tell me how to add code to monitor downloads from my site using Google Analytics please?

I've tried to post this several times but it's failed everytime, even though I can reply to others.

If this works, I'll post the full question

EDIT: Sorry but for some reason I can't copy my text from a Word doc and paste it into this text box. I'll have another go (type it all out) and submit again,

In the mean time - if anyone can help with this topic I'd be grateful

Okay,
it seems that the reason I can't post my full question is because I was using example html code in my post, so I'll have to try to explain it a different way.
I use Google Analytics for tracking visitors to pages and this is fine, except that the gif file is invisible.

It is possible to monitor downloads using Google Analytics code.

In Webeasy, the help screens state the following:

Using the Custom Script Assistant
Use the Custom Script Assistant to create your own scripting procedures and create links that call them. You can create scripts for the Source code, Body events or Object events.
Important!
Avoid using commands beginning with <. If such commands are linked to an image, they will overwrite the image definition.
etc etc

I have a button for my download (works fine) but when I enter the script into the object events section of the custom scripte assistant, the button disappears when I preview it.
This script of course starts with a "<" (hence my analytics gif being invisible too).

So, does anyone have a workaround for this problem?
I wondered if having 2 buttons, grouped, one on top of the other, might do the trick, so that one was visible and one invisible. Didn't seem to work though.
Scratch you heads for me please folks.
