So, I'm REALLY new to website design. I've developed one for my sister and her upcoming wedding - but before I put it online, I want to find out something that hopefully will save me some time/money/resources/etc later. Please respond to the following situation/question- I want to have MY website for example <<ignore the links - they're not pointing to any real websites>>: www.mywebsite.com. Then I want to have several different websites with different looks/templates but tie them to the main website. It would look like this: www.mywebsite.com/template1 and www.mywebsite.com/template2. So there'd be two "homes" for these: One to take me to mywebsite.com/template home and the other would be mywebsite.com home. Does that make sense? How would I do it easily? Thanks in advance and wish me luck.

You can have as many "sub websites" in this manner as you want, what you are actually talking about is making FOLDERS or DIRECTORIES. A domain can have as many folders as you want.
Depending on your webhost, you could also consider making actual "Sub-Domains" which are like "http://newsite.yoursite.com". Subdomains are not always supported with your package so you need to know whats included with your webhost package. But your safe and sure bet is creating a folder. The main page in your new folder must be named INDEX.HTML then you can call the new site by simplying going to "http://yoursite.com/newfolder".

My site is a good example of this.
www.koehlerinjection.com
For example: Here is a page I did for my wife's side line.
http://www.koehlerinjection.com/memories/memories.htm
Koehlerinjection.com is located in the primary directory of the web folder on my ISP. The first "memories" is a Sub folder I made to keep the parts of this page separate from any other page. Memories.htm is the actual page of course.
I do all my pages this way because:
1: I have to change and update things a lot.
2: It solves any issue with WE and lots of pages.
3: Uploading and changing takes seconds instead of forever with a lot of pages.
4: IF something gets fouled up only 1 page is affected while I figure out where I screwed up. :o No panic and hysteria with this format.
5: I don't have the problem of sorting out what is wrong when a multiple page site gets messed up.
6: Keywords, page title, etc can be made specific for each page
