Help with usb connecting

I have the software downloaded I can download pics with no problem cant download music. anyway I want to know how I can download via usb cable bought one to see if I can get the ringtones this way but It dosent detect the usb cord what am I doing wrong. what else do I need. This is getting frustrating can someone please help.
