I have a Lexmark X 1185 and using an HP zt1175 with Windowx XP Home OS. I have high speed internet through Comcast and my telephone company is Vonage. Vonage is directly connected to my computer through Motorola. When XP reconized a Fax modem they said it is ESS ES56H-PI Data Fax Modem.
When I try to send a fax it says "Your transmission will not be processed immediately Line down on last attempt".

We need to determine if your modem is reporting calling out correctly:
1. From Windows, click Start, Run, then type in hypertrm and click OK.
2. A Connection Description screen should pop up asking for a name for the connection. Type in Test, then click OK.
3. A screen should appear asking for a phone number. Click the Cancel button.
4. You should be at a blank HyperTerminal screen, with a blinking cursor. Type in ATE1 (may not show up as you type it) and hit enter. It should respond with OK.*
5. Then type in ATDT and the phone number you are trying to call to here.
What happens?

After I typed in ATDT and the phone number only the phone # showed up and the ATDT disappeared.
I appreciate you helping me. Thank you.

Make sure you have a telephone line connected to the analog modem. Theres either a problem with the modem or the connection.

Can you explain what an analog modem is? I have vonage phone service which is hooked up to my laptop. I do not have a regular land line phone.

The analog modem is the modem in the computer.
