View Full Version : Classic Phone won't start
Running XP SP2 home on AMD 2800, 1.5 gig ram. Running AVG antivirus and Zonealarm Pro. New Agere Systems PCI Softmodem that came with CLASSIC PHONE TOOLS 4.01. Double clicking on the desktop icon to start CPT and sometimes it will run smoothly but most of the time the CPT splash screen comes up, the program starts almost, but the splash screen will not go away. then title bar of CPT will show message "not responding" and it doesn't Need to use task manager to shut it down. When it does start it works fine. 2 minutes after having a problem and not starting properly it will work just fine.

Additionally if you enable logging by ticking the "append to log" box of your modem diagnostics tab (in control panel), viewing the log may also give some clues of whats happening. Have you tried starting the program with all of your other background/utility software temporarily shutdown - just to see whether there is a compatilbility issue. Finally, I've seen BVRP post here that they have a more reliable update version for some products when used under Windows XP - perhaps that applies to 4.01 - I'm sure they will make their suggestions in due course.

Is it only opening Smoothly after you restart the computer, or does sometimes it still open fine after you have already opened and closed it once?
Restarting doesn't seem to make any difference. It will go fine once. Then not fine 30 seconds later, needing to use task manager to close it when it won't fininsh opening. Then a minute later it will work just fine. shutting down Zonealarm or AVG antivirus doesn't seem to make a difference either.

If your example is a literal example, then yes the program will probably not be able to be opened that soon after closing it, it is still shutting down and releasing the modem at that point.
That was just an example. It generally won't start properly in the first place. Then I use task manager to shut it down. A minute later it may start just fine. Or maybe not. Once going, it works just fine. It just may take 4 or five tries to get it going. Neither modem exchange nor the log show anything.
A little credit here. The only reason I would be trying to open it that soon after closing it is because it didn't work right in the first place.

It may be your modem. Try updating your modem drivers.

Are you actually able to open the Modem exchange on the times that it does not open? If you are, save it and send that to Forums@bvrpusa.com with a link to this thread for refernce so I can research the issue.
What log do you mean?
Cannot open modem exchange unless CPT starts properly. If it hangs up, it will not do anything. From what I can tell it only shows results from its current use? not any previous use or session?
Sorry, I was refering to the log if I open control panel> phone & modem options >modems >properties >diagnostics and check box to append log.
Just for reference the modem driver is up to date.

Correct, the modem exchage is only going to show the current session.
Please contact our technical support queue at 720-330-1458 between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm Mountain Time, Monday through Friday or by e-mail at forums@bvrpusa.com. I think we may want to try a different version.
