Can someone recommend an alternative to Phone Tools?

Last year the software told me that the licence was dead. Someone at BVRP helpfully sorted it out with a new licence.

Now it tells me that the licence is being used on another computer. It isn't. (Only a maniac would use this software more than they had to.) Now the world is set to fall in on my head in three days time.

PhoneTools clearly does not like me, so the time has come to find an alternative. I just can't take this much hassle with what is clearly a defective licence system.

Then again, BVRP is not alone in this Acrobat and ScanSoft have equally crap authetication and activation systems.

Can someone recommend an alternative to Phone Tools? That will depend what type (make and model) of modem that you want to use it with. Independant mode modems in particular have few software packages which fully support them and PhoneTools, like it or not, is the dominant player. This is why its so important that BVRP/Avanquest fixes bugs to make the software work properly.

Thanks for the gloomy response.

It is a USR/3Com Professional Message Modem.

The thought of an annual battle with BVRP to get a new licence does not appeal.

The thought of an annual battle with BVRP to get a new licence does not appeal. The response matches the weather today - just as with the weather, I to wish it could be brighter! My thoughts are that if you get in touch with USR in Taplow (or is it Hemel?), they should be able to advise if there are other products designed to work with those modems. The software developer would likely need to obtain the internal pipeline AT commands for controlling message retrieval and configuration so USR would know who's shown an interest. Although there are other packages with USR independant modem support, they're not any better looking than CPT I'm afraid. There's still the possibility that BVRP can fix the problems your experioencing though... so its not all gloomy!

Thanks. This is an old modem. The company has been through several incarnations since I bought it. But the darned things works great. (Does anyone still make analogue modems?)

Maybe I will just dig out the original software. If it is like the OEM version of Phonetools that came with my internal modem, it will do just fine, without having constant licence issues.
