Reading voice messages from the modem after starting Phonetools I get an error message: "The requested operation cannot be performed (acmStreamOpen)"
Error message in attempting to open a voice message: "This command needs to have an alias-, file, driver- or device name" (Translated from German... ;-)
The Voice mails are stored as “Message-ID.ACM” and “Message-ID.PCM” in the directory “....\BVRP Software\Classic PhoneTools\vocfiles\GSM,8000,255,1\…”
But there is no relating file in "...\BVRP Software\Classic PhoneTools\vocfiles\WAVMS,11025,8,1\…"
Probably there could be a problem in converting the stored ACM-/PCM-files into WAV-files. Maybe a driver (dll) is missing or not registered.

I do not understand what you mean. Are you trying to receive messages from the modem itself during independant mode, or are these messages that were received directly into the Classic Phonetools?

I have a similar problem. Have had it for some time.

I get this message:

There is no entry for "alias" in the "Help" file.

To assist in answering your question in a timely manner, it is helpful to post the following information when you ask a question:

1. What version of our software are you using? This can typically be found by clicking Menu(s), Help, About <Product Name>.

2. What modem/phone are you using? What modem are you using?
- In Windows XP/2000: This can be found by clicking Start, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, Modems tab. Your modem name will be listed here.
- In Windows 98/Me: This can be found by clicking Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems. Your modem name will be listed here.

3. What operating system are you using? E.g., Windows XP SP1, Windows 98 SE. This can normally be found by right-clicking 'My Computer' and left-clicking properties and it will be listed under the System section on the General tab.

4. Details of the issue including any error messages, e.g, "When I try to install it keeps stating 'Please insert disk 1'."

5. Scenarios under which the issue occurs, e.g., "I can normally send faxes, but cannot to the 310 area code."

6. How did you receive the software? E.g., received with a Dell A920 printer, received with a Dell Dimension 8400, received with a US Robotics Fax Win INT modem, purchased at www.bvrpusa.com, purchased a box at Fry's, etc...

7. Your e-mail address is also helpful should we need to send you a file or download link.

These boilerplate replies may get support off the hook, but it should not be necessary to answer a list of irrelevant questions when the user offers an error message.

That error message in itself should be adequate.

This response is a sign of someone just pretending to be helpful.

This response is a sign of someone just pretending to be helpful.I think the response is a sign of someone wanting the NECESSARY info to be able to pass to the programmers so they can reproduce the problem. The tech support people in most software companies will usually not be involved in the programming - only forwarding all of the symptoms/details to back desk/quality control for investigation so they can sort it out. If a person wants full assistance, they should be willing to provide full information to help with the problem solving - it's not a big ask.

I downloaded a trial version of Classic Phone Tools.
I also had this problem trying to listen to voice messages. Messages showed up in my inbox, but would not play. I got the message

"This command needs to have an alias-, file, driver- or device name"

So now what? I'd really like to get those messages.

1. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment

2. Click on Sound Recorder.

3. Try to record your voice and play it back.

If that doesn't work, you may be having trouble with your Windows sound recorder or sound card settings. Please contact Dell Computer Corporation technical support and let them know about your problem. 1-888-560-8324

If that you can record in Windows sound recorder, the recording or playback device may be set incorrectly.

1. Open Phonetools

2. Click "Configure" and "General Configuration" and click on the voice tab.

3. Under Greeting and Record, click the "Message Management" button (has a picture of a yellow box and speaker on it)

4. Click "Display" at the top and then "parameters" or "settings"

5. At the bottom you should now have "Playback device" and "Recording device." Make sure both of these are set to "Wave Mapper."

If your issue is still not resolved, we may need to manually change the recording and playback device.

NOTE: Please make sure Phonetools is closed.

1. Click on "Start"

2. Point to "Find"

3. Click on "Files or Folders"

4. In the field "Named" - type in "voicecfg.ini" (without the quotes)

5. Make sure that you have "C:" in the field named "Look In"

6. Click on "Find Now"

7. There will be one file listed in the results window which will open at the bottom. Double Click on that file.

8. Under the [DEVICES] section, make sure that playback and/or recording =65535
If it is set to anything else, change it to 65535.

9. Click "File" then "Save". Then close this window and you should be able to use PhoneTools.
