I recently updated my Classic Phone Tools to work with Windows XP (thanks alot for your help!), but now it doesn't want to recognize my Dell Data Fax Modem. It lists "No Device Connected" on the main Phone Tools screen, and when I go to Configure -> Change Modem it takes me to the Device Configuration Wizard. When I select my modem, it then searches for the driver: the Wizard decides that the "device has been detected but could not be identified."

If, on the other hand, I select the driver from the list, the appropriate driver being for the "Motorola Dell V.90 56k Modem," the program passes rapidly from "communication not active" to "Recieve mode is Fax," to "No device connected." Apparently it briefly recognizes the modem, then decides not to after all.

I cannot find a newer driver for my modem, and the modem responds to queries through the Device Manager panel.

I am running Classic Phone Tools 4.23 on a Dell XPS T500 at 800 Mhz with 768 Mb RAM, using Windows XP (5.01.2600) Service Pack 2. The information page acknowledges that I have a Dell V.90 56k Modem (1/1), but says "Modem does not respond."

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

The Dell Data/Fax modem driver is a generic driver and the Classic Phonetools is not going to function with it. You will need to contact Dell to get the XP drivers specific to your modem installed and then the Classic Phonetools should be able to identify it.

Dell didn't have an XP driver. Aztech does not provide a driver for my modem... they claim that the "Dell Data Fax Modem" driver is the best:

"1) Windows XP already has an inbuilt driver (detected as "Dell Data Fax Modem"). Plug in the PCI modem, and the system will detect and install the hardware driver automatically without user intervention
2) For users who upgraded from previous OS, then you must first remove the old modem driver before upgrading to WinXP."

So then what should I do?

Thanks,

Jon

So is the Dell Data/Fax driver still installed or is the driver updated now?

I'm sorry, I should have made that a bit more clear: the only driver available is the generic "Dell Data Fax Modem" driver. I already had it installed, and it is the one I have installed currently. Aztech claims that this driver is adequate, and does not provide a specific XP driver for my modem. Unfortunately, my version of Classic Phone Tools does not want to work with my modem using the "Dell Data Fax Modem" driver. So there can be no update, because no updated driver exists, and Dell cannot help me, because they only have the drivers that Aztech provides. Which brings me back to you.

I hope you folks can come up with a solution to this, other than me having to buy a new modem. I've been very happy with my modem and Phone Tools for a long time. :)

Thanks for your continued efforts to understand my problem,

Jon

P.S. To clarify: before I updated my Phone Tools to a version compatable with XP, I was running PHONETOOLS 2.11c under Windows XP and it would fax... the Capture Fax function would not work, but Phone Tools recognized the modem. I cannot be 100% certain, but I believe this was using the generic "Dell Data Fax Modem" driver.

I will send you drivers for the Classic Phonetools that has the Aztech modems in them. You can try manually setting the Classic Phonetools to the correct Aztech driver to see if it works.
